ducation Development and Assessment (EDA), in partnership with the governor services section of a large London education authority, has this year run a pilot programme for clerks to governing bodies.

The programme consisted of training workshops, self directed study materials and one-to-one visits with the clerks in their place of work. Units from the NVQ Level 3 in Business and Administration were discussed and the appropriate ones were selected by the individual clerks with help from their assessor. The programme began in September 2007 and, in May 2008, 6 clerks achieved the full NVQ at Level 3. Comments from the successful clerks included:

“The process was valuable to me as it makes you realise what you can do. It also gives evidence to future employers that you are capable of a certain standard.”

“I feel motivated to take further qualifications. It made me reflect on how I work.”

“I do feel my workplace will benefit as the experience has given me more confidence and I now realise how much I do achieve everyday at work.”
